Comorbidity of ADHD and SLD: Assessment and Intervention Strategies

Vincent Alphonso

Presented by: Alfonso DuPaul

The comorbidity rates of ADHD and SLDs range from 33-45% which means that behavior and learning challenges are many and require multiple and sustained interventions. Even if comorbidity does not exist, significant behavior and learning challenges are faced by individuals with either disorder. Thus, clearly defined and executed interventions are required and typically include psychopharmacology, cognitive-behavioral strategies, academic interventions and supports, and organizational skills training. This session will provide participants with information about the comorbidity of these two disorders including incidence and prevalence rates, characteristics of each disorder separately and together, assessment strategies to inform intervention development, and leading interventions that address behavior and learning manifestations of these disorders. Recommendations for future research that will inform practice will be presented.
