Can Genetics Help in Identifying Specific Reading Disabilities?

Elliot, J. & Grigorenko

Presented by: Grigorenko

Reading disorders are crucial aspects of human communication that have been extensively researched for over two centuries in the social and biological sciences. Despite extensive research, the origins of language and associated traits, including reading and disorders, remain a mystery. Therefore, understanding these traits and disorders requires an examination of the cognitive processes, neurobiology, and genetics underlying this uniquely human type of brain activity (Grigorenko et al., 2020). An evolutionary context is necessary for exploring these factors, which involves comparing our species’ genome with that of our closest living relatives, the great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans).
